The municipality will spend 2007 defining the project and securing financing, he said.
Rosario and local IT hub Polo Tecnológico plan to launch an international bidding process next month to select a consultancy to map out a WiMax project with Wi-Fi hotspots installed all over the city, Lifschitz said. The city expects to spend 250,000 pesos (US$80,000) on this phase, he added.

In the next few weeks, local companies Openware and Transdatos will start deploying the necessary infrastructure for a pilot Wi-Fi program in Córdoba Street, which is a pedestrian area in downtown Rosario.
The measures are part of the so-called Ciudad Digital 2010 project, proposed by councilor Jorge Boasso, which the municipality approved in October last year. The initial aim is to provide connections in airports, bus stations, public offices and universities.
Authorities from the IT hub and the municipality recently visited several cities in the US where digital projects have been deployed, including San Francisco and Mountain View in California and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Lifschitz said the municipality has signed an agreement with San Francisco's authorities to receive advice on the project.
His team also visited IT companies such as Intel (Nasdaq: INTC), Cisco (Nasdaq: CSCO), Sun Microsystems (Nasdaq: SUNW) and Oracle (Nasdaq: ORCL) to familiarize themselves with the latest technologies available for such projects.
